When Stuart came along to our digital support session at Bramhall Library, he was feeling pretty fed up.
Stuart is blind and also hard of hearing. He had recently been given new hearing aids that connect to his phone. They were meant to make life easier, but instead they were becoming a real source of frustration. Every time someone spoke to him, his phone and hearing aids seemed to have a mind of their own, leaving him feeling overwhelmed. In fact, he was thinking about giving up on using them altogether.
Together, we spent some time looking at the settings, worked out what was causing the problem and showed Stuart how to manage the connection in future. We also showed one of our digital champions how to do the same, so there would always be someone who could help if he or others needed it again.
The change was immediate. Stuart was so relieved that he could keep using his hearing aids without all the interruptions. He also told us how much it meant that the session was held in his local library, somewhere familiar, welcoming and easy for him to get to.
It’s easy to think that digital support is all about learning new skills, but sometimes it’s about something much simpler. It’s about helping technology work the way it’s supposed to. Whether that’s making a phone easier to use, helping someone stay connected or making everyday tasks feel less overwhelming, a little bit of support at the right time can make a huge difference. That’s what we’re here for.
