Digital Confidence Supporting Better Health and Wellbeing

Health isn’t always about hospitals or appointments. Increasingly, it depends on being able to use technology with confidence.

Digital champions discuss information

Last week, Starting Point supported people to use digital tools in ways that will help them manage their health, wellbeing and independence more effectively.

One learner discovered how simple features on her iPhone could make everyday life easier. After learning about accessibility features and using her phone’s camera more confidently, she shared how she had recently photographed important information at the hospital instead of trying to copy it all down by hand.

Another learner told us that previous experiences had left her feeling embarrassed when trying to access digital services, explaining that she had been made to feel “very stupid” when asking for help elsewhere. At Starting Point, she was able to practise new skills in a supportive environment and told us that we had been “not patronising or condescending”, giving her the confidence to continue learning and return for more support.

Alongside this, our National Databank continued to remove barriers to staying connected by providing free mobile data to people who could not otherwise afford it. Reliable connectivity enables people to access NHS information, communicate with support services, stay in touch with family and friends and use the growing number of health services that are now available online.

These stories remind us that improving digital confidence isn’t just about teaching people how to use technology. It helps people feel more in control, reduces anxiety, improves access to health information and services, and supports them to live more independently.

At Starting Point, we believe digital inclusion is increasingly becoming a social determinant of health. By helping people develop the confidence to use technology in everyday life, we are also helping them to access the services, information and support that enable healthier, more independent lives.
