Safer Internet Day at Starting Point with CDL Software: Learning to Stay Safe Online

Starting Point marked Safer Internet Day with an informative and engaging session delivered by cyber security experts Sam and Tina from CDL Software. It was a busy session, with 12 digital skills learners attending to build their understanding of how to stay safe and confident online.

The session focused on some of the key questions people face when using the internet every day. Learners explored what it really means to give personal information to a company , when it’s necessary, whether it’s worth sharing, and how to make informed decisions about their data.

Sam and Tina also covered how AI works and where it appears in everyday digital services. Another important topic was online security, including what a password manager is and whether using one could help keep accounts safer.

Many of these subjects are covered within our regular digital skills sessions, but learners always appreciate the opportunity to revisit key topics. The session provided a valuable refresher and gave learners the chance to hear directly from industry experts, ask questions and deepen their understanding.

There was plenty of food for thought, and the discussion reflected the reality that many people are becoming more reliant on digital services. One learner shared:

“It’s the way the world is going – I’ve only been on online banking for the past month and know I need to learn more.”

The session clearly showed that our digital skills learners are keen to gather as much information as possible. They understand that being online is increasingly necessary for everyday tasks such as banking, shopping and accessing services. Many also recognise that using the internet can make life quicker and easier.

At the same time, learners are very aware of the risks. They want the skills and knowledge to stay safe, avoid scams, and understand how their personal data is being used.

The session generated plenty of discussion and showed just how motivated learners are to understand the realities of online security. Their curiosity and willingness to ask challenging questions reflected a real commitment to staying safe. As one learner asked:

“I’d like to know how hackers actually hack and what they are looking for once they are on a device.”

It has given us lots to think about at Starting Point and we will continue to develop our learner-led sessions to give learners the information they want in an accessible way.

A huge thank you to CDL for their ongoing support to help us in our mission of supporting people to thrive online.
