Child Safety Week: Helping Families Navigate a Digital World

As Child Safety Week draws to a close, it’s a timely reminder that keeping children safe today means thinking about both the physical and digital worlds.

For many families, technology is woven into everyday life. From completing homework and staying in touch with friends and family to gaming, social media, and entertainment, children are spending more time online than ever before. While the internet brings incredible opportunities, it can also create challenges that many parents and carers feel unprepared for.

At Starting Point, we’ve been spending time bringing together all of our family-focused digital safety resources into one easy-to-access place. We know that finding trustworthy information can be overwhelming, particularly when technology changes so quickly.

Our new Digital and Families page on Learnworlds has been designed to help families build confidence, develop positive digital habits, and stay safe online together. Whether you’re looking for guidance on screen time, parental controls, online privacy, social media, or understanding the latest apps and platforms, we’ve created practical resources that can help.

Families can access:

  • A free Online Safety for Families: A Parent’s Guide course
  • Guides to tools such as Google Family LinkApple Family SharingQustodio, and Life360
  • Resources to help manage screen time and digital wellbeing
  • Information about online security and staying safe online

In addition, we host our toddler and parent drop-ins every Monday morning and Console Club (11.30am – 12.30pm) for young people in Year 6 – 9 every Wednesday evening (4.30pm – 6pm) throughout term times. Find out more on our Events page.

The reality is, however, that online safety is a fast-moving area. New apps, trends, opportunities, and risks emerge constantly. That’s why it’s important that organisations like ours continue investing in learning so we can provide the best possible support to families. On Monday, Claire and Nicola from the Starting Point team will be travelling to Brussels to attend the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) Conference at Google HQ. The conference brings together experts from across the world to discuss the latest developments in online safety, digital wellbeing, emerging technologies, and the challenges facing children and families.

For us, this is about ensuring that the advice, guidance, and support we offer families is based on the latest evidence and best practice. Families deserve access to up-to-date information that helps them make informed decisions in an increasingly complex digital world.

We are proud to work alongside partners including Stockport Council, DigiKnow, libraries, schools, and family hubs to support parents, carers, grandparents, and young people to build their digital confidence safely. As Child Safety Week comes to an end, our message is simple: you don’t need to be a technology expert to help keep your children safe online. Small conversations, clear boundaries, and access to trusted information can make a huge difference.

And if you need support, Starting Point is here to help.

Together, we can help families build positive digital habits, stay safe online, and make the most of everything technology has to offer.
