Reconnecting Through Technology: Bradley’s Story

At Starting Point, we often talk about the importance of digital access, but behind every statistic is a real person whose life is shaped by whether or not they can get online. Bradley’s story is a powerful reminder of how much a simple device can mean.

Bradley first came to us through the Digiknow Lending Library after a difficult setback. He had been preparing to begin a Level 3 course in Cyber Security, an exciting step toward building new skills and opening up future opportunities. Unfortunately, his laptop was stolen. Without the means to replace it, and unable to afford the excess on his housing insurance, his plans were suddenly put on hold.

For Bradley, losing his laptop wasn’t just about missing equipment. It meant losing his main way of staying connected with the things and people that matter to him. One of Bradley’s passions is DJing, and much of the communication and collaboration around that happens online. Without a device, he felt increasingly disconnected from that world and the community around it.

Through the Digiknow Lending Library, and thanks to the generous support of Community Computers, we were able to provide Bradley with a donated laptop. It allowed him to get back online and begin rebuilding those connections.

Bradley told us:

“I am really grateful for the laptop. I have learnt a lot of things and when I was in hospital I was able to keep in touch with people.”

Moments like this show why digital inclusion matters so much. A device can support education, creativity, friendships, and wellbeing; sometimes all at once. When Bradley was in hospital, being able to stay connected helped him maintain those important social links that can make a difficult time feel less isolating.

More recently, Bradley got back in touch with us again. This time, he was looking for advice about buying a smartphone and wanted to make sure he found a trustworthy refurbished option. Buying technology can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re working with a limited budget or worried about being taken advantage of.

This is exactly why the Digiknow helpline exists. Our team can provide friendly, practical advice over the phone to help people make informed decisions about devices, connectivity, and digital skills. We also share guidance through our Best Value Devices guide, which helps people find reliable, affordable tech options:

Stories like Bradley’s highlight something we see every day: digital exclusion isn’t just about not having a device. It’s about missed opportunities, lost confidence, and the feeling of being cut off from everyday life.

But the opposite is also true. When communities come together, through donated equipment, shared knowledge, and supportive services, technology becomes a bridge rather than a barrier.

At Starting Point, we’re proud to play a small part in that process. Whether it’s lending a laptop, offering trusted advice, or simply listening and helping someone figure out their next step, every connection matters.

Bradley’s journey isn’t finished yet, and we’re glad to still be part of it.
