This week, we asked our senior digital inclusion officer: Claire to tell us a little bit about how she started the new year, and it was a strong start for sure.
Last week, we launched the first in our new series of Online Harms sessions aimed specifically at grandparents, funded by Autotrader, and what a brilliant start it was! Held in our brand new Starting Point Learning Hub, Session 1 brought together a group of grandparents keen to understand better the digital world their grandchildren are growing up in, and the risks that can come with it.
Session 1: Online Worlds, Real Risks
Our first session focused on identifying different types of online harms and exploring the range of risks young people may encounter. From unsafe online communities to misleading content, privacy concerns, and harmful interactions, learners were introduced to the realities young people navigate every day.
Many participants shared personal stories about their grandchildren and talked openly about wanting to feel more informed so they could offer better support. It was inspiring to see such genuine curiosity and commitment to learning.
Spot the Risk Activity
The group took part in a “spot the risk” activity using case studies to identify potential harms and discuss what a supportive response might look like for a young person in that scenario. Learners worked through:
- What’s really happening in this situation?
- What could the harm or risk be?
- What could I say or do to help?
There was plenty of thoughtful discussion, teamwork, and a real sense of shared purpose.
One learner, Leo, summed up the experience perfectly, saying:
“A scary and eye-opening session but really needed, lots to think about.”
What’s Next?
Next week, we’ll be delving deeper into the apps and platforms young people use most frequently, exploring the hidden harms and emerging risks behind familiar icons. It promises to be another insightful session — and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back.
