Every week, we’re reminded just how much of our work is powered by the generosity, commitment, and humanity of our volunteers. This week, three Digital Champions shared reflections that capture the heart of why volunteering matters, not only for the people they support, but for their own growth, belonging and confidence.

One volunteer told us:
“It was a true pleasure to work with you, you do a fantastic job.”
Short, simple, and incredibly uplifting. These moments of appreciation remind us that creating a welcoming environment where volunteers feel valued is just as important as the services we provide.
Learning, Connection, and Generational Impact
Another volunteer shared a powerful reflection on the deeper value of contributing time and skills:
“Volunteering is always a pleasure and a learning experience, a lot of times I do it in my free time, without my company being aware of it. Thank you for this experience, it’s been very informative. I’ve learned a lot and it’s been very much appreciated. You, the team and people I have met along the way have been truly inspirational. The work you do will definitely have a generational impact across the area.”
There’s so much insight here—volunteering is not just an act of kindness; it’s a pathway to new knowledge, new people, and a sense of purpose that extends far beyond the day-to-day tasks.
This idea of “generational impact” is especially meaningful. Our Digital Champions don’t just help someone with a device or form—they help families stay connected, support job searches, open doors to education, and build confidence that can change lives for years to come.
Finding Belonging and Voice Through Volunteering
One of our newest volunteers offered a beautiful reflection on the social and personal value of being part of the team:
“Thank you for your continuous wonderful effort. Thank you very much for your interest and effort to me. I’ve liked to talk with patient and cooperative friends. I have found integration into society and I am happy to provide any help or experience I have to everyone. The truth is I have benefitted a lot from the experiences. The course with Claire was very good, I learned from the experiences of trainees and the effort and patience of Claire. I look forward to the wonderful volunteer celebration and I hope I will get to know all these digital champion heroes and share with them these happy times.”
Volunteering is often described as “giving back,” but what we hear again and again is that volunteers receive just as much: connection, belonging, and the confidence to step into new chapters of their lives.
Volunteer Spotlight: Abdul — Building Confidence & Community*
Abdul* has been a Digital Champion since August 2025. A trained professional restarting his career in the UK, he chose to volunteer to meet new people, strengthen his spoken English, and contribute meaningfully to his community.
He shared:
“This has given me a boost to my confidence with speaking in English. I am delighted that people understand what I say. I can also hear people with accents and feel confident to talk with them. It has been very good.”
His journey reflects what we hope every volunteer experiences:
growth, encouragement, pride, and the knowledge that they belong here.

Why These Voices Matter
These quotes highlight something essential: volunteering is more than a role.
It’s confidence-building, community-shaping, and often life-changing.
Our volunteers are the reason people feel welcomed rather than overwhelmed, supported rather than stuck. They bring patience, empathy, and a willingness to learn, and that combination transforms lives every single day.
And for the volunteers themselves, it offers new friendships, skills, purpose and joy.
Our digital champion programme is funded by The National Lottery Community Programme.
