Last night, we gathered at Start Point Coffee Shop in Woodley Precinct to celebrate something truly special; the incredible collective effort behind helping people across Stockport to live well online.
The evening marked the launch of the Starting Point Impact Report, a look back at what we’ve achieved together over the past 12 months and beyond, and a look ahead to our 2025–2030 strategy, which will build on the strong foundations we’ve created through partnership, volunteering, community learning and listening.
And of course, we did it in true Starting Point style, with pie and chips, laughter, and a sense of shared pride in what we’ve achieved together.
This past year alone, we have supported 1025 new individuals to get online, build confidence, and connect to the opportunities that the internet brings. Through partnerships like Community Computers, residents have saved more than £331,000 on connectivity and devices, real savings that make a real difference.
And none of this happens without people. Our volunteers, partners, funders, and digital champions are the beating heart of this movement. You are the trusted faces in local places, helping neighbours fill out forms, apply for jobs, contact loved ones, and discover the confidence that comes with digital skills.
We were honoured to welcome Cllr Dan Oliver (and old friend and colleague), Michael Cullen Chief Executive of Stockport Council, and partners from across Greater Manchester, including representatives from GMCA, Stockport Homes, Sector3, Community Computers, CDL and PIE, as we looked back on what we’ve achieved together.
We shared stories that bring the impact to life:
Rob’s journey from learner to volunteer, giving back to the community that supported him. Anita’s story of overcoming digital poverty and regaining confidence. A learner’s simple but powerful message: “Thank you, I’ve got a job interview.”
Each story reminded us that digital inclusion isn’t just about technology, it’s about people, opportunity, and connection.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to our shared ambition for a Radically Digital Stockport, one where everyone can thrive online.
Our goals are clear: to help residents stay healthy, safe, and connected through digital tools. To keep tackling the cost of being online. To grow our Digital Champion network and continue supporting people where they are, in the heart of their communities.
