Andy was referred to Starting Point by the Job Center as he needed support to apply for jobs online. He started to attend sessions at Cornerstone, Stockport Homes’ head office hosted by our senior digital inclusion officer Claire.

After Claire supported him to save and upload his CV and apply for some jobs, Andy decided he wanted to commit to regular learning and began attending both our Cornerstone and York Street sessions showing a real commitment to learning new skills. 

Andy told us that he was looking for work as a carer and was finding that all the job descriptions he came across included digital skills. His confidence in his abilities was low and he had already attempted to enrol at college to complete a digital skills course but had found the enrolment process confusing and had not been able to get on to a course.    

His smartphone was his only access to the world of being online and the small screen just made things harder highlighting the issues that people have even if they do have a device.

Andy’s goals were to learn IT skills for the world of work, to be able to communicate with others via email and to be able to upload his CV from his device and apply for job. He began working on entry level digital skills with our digital champions and accessed our device lending library where he was able to borrow a tablet.

Thanks to Good Things Foundation’s databank, we issued a SIM card and this allowed him internet access at home.  

As Andy progressed with entry level skills, he felt confident to enrol on a Level 1 Digital Skills course. We are delighted to say that Andy has completed the Level 1 course and is thriving as he continues to learn new skills.
