How to handle a scam email

This morning, I was informed that my driving licence had been suspended because I have an overdue balance. It’s a bit odd as you don’t have to pay an annual fee for a UK driving licence so that was alarm bell number one! Looking at the email below, would this make you suspicious?

In fairness, it’s quite a convincing one: the sender title looks legitimate and they have used logos that look credible BUT a few things stand out.

Look at the link at the bottom, the one they want you to click on. The DVLA website is https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/driver-and-vehicle-licensing-agency and starts http://www.gov.uk. In addition, of you click on the sender title you will see who actually sent you the email:

Not as convincing now. So you can do a few things.

From the above screen you can block the contact and you can also forward the email to report@phishing.gov.uk and the National Cyber Security Centre will investigate it and finally, delete the email.

Phishing emails like this are normally intended to get hold of your bank details, take money or expose your device to a virus. You can find out more using our Email and Text Scams guide HERE
