Olex writes about Refugee Week 2024

My name is Olex. I came to the UK because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, my family are now scattered across different countries, Italy, Spain – now I’m in the UK.

I suppose I am a refugee, I would say I am, but the government call us something different, it’s a strange in-between situation.

I find it very hard to watch the news about Ukraine, I try to only follow the big updates – it’s too hard to watch. Instead, I focus on what I can do in the UK and helping people here. I would love to work as a translator, I can speak three languages, and I know I can be useful and use my skills. I had a good job in Ukraine, but it’s been tough finding work here where I can use my experience.

When I came to Stockport, the only people I knew were on the phone! Volunteering is great way to meet people and feel more at home. I volunteer for Starting Point as a DigiKnow digital champion at Stockport Homes’ head quarters – Cornerstone. I also volunteer for Stockport continuing education.

My interest in computers started with a Tamagotchi when I was a kid, it was fascinating, this little creature on a screen. Then I got into programming. I was a very creative child, dancing, drawing, playing music, but as an adult I got into computers. I can build a computer or create a programme.

I had a job in Ukraine that used computers but I was also working with people, and that’s something I enjoy. Volunteering has been useful for me  –  I’ve had tips on finding a job from learners and staff at Starting Point, and I’ve signed up to a translation course that Starting Point told me about.

I’m using my skills – it’s good for my dignity, helping other people, I feel better about myself, that’s important.

If I was going to encourage someone else to volunteer I would say that it can help you find a job, you can find something connected to a hobby so it’s fun. It’s good for you talking to lots of different people, you can practice your English if you need to, and it makes you feel good about yourself.

I enjoy volunteering as a digital champion, I would say, just give it a try!
