Digital Support for HAF providers

We know, as HAF (Holiday activity and food provision) providers, how important it is to link families in with additional support in the borough. That is why, this summer, we have developed a 2 hour session plan to help you host a Digital Day, should you want to. Below is all the information you need and where you can get support to make your day the best ever!

The team at Starting Point, as part of the DigiKnow network, have created a 2hr session plan all around stop animation. It has been created so anyone with even the most basic digital skills, can pick it up, get involved and has some fun with your young people and families.

Why? Our hope is that by having a digital day, your whole team of staff, volunteers and young people will get talking about digital. We know how expensive it can be do keep up with the latest technology. Do you know it could cost around £100 a year just to have a router plugged in? Through DigiKnow, we can offer:

  • access to free loaded SIM cards
  • regular data top-ups
  • a devices lending library scheme where people can borrow a device for up to 6 months
  • advice on where to buy high quality refurbished devices starting at £50
  • support to access social broadband tarrifs
  • information about the many skills sessions available throughout Stockport
  • support for your organisation (should you want to) to become a DigiKnow support hub too with free digital champion training, funding advice and support

So back to the day. We propose a day of Lego, photos and animation. To do this you will need a device that can take photos such as a tablet or a phone. If you need to borrow one we can help with that. You will also need a tub of Lego such as this box HERE (look below for more information about buying the Lego boxes), a warm space and some young people! By making Lego structures, taking a photo, moving it a bit and taking another photo; we can put all this together to create a short animation. Have a look at the video below to see how the professionals do it.

First download the Digital Day session plan HERE and see what you think. Claire in the Starting Point team is available on a Monday to answer any questions you may have about running the session. You can contact her on 0161 494 9947 or at claire@startpoint.org.uk

Starting Point are hosting 1hr DigiKnow Friends session for you to find out more about what support is on offer for parents and you can book on one of these HERE

Can’t afford the Lego kits out of your existing HAF budget? Talk to the HAF team HERE to see if they can arrange for you to borrow one from another provider or arrange a little bit more money to purchase your own.

We would like to drop off some flyers for you to hand out to your families. You can view them HERE but please get in touch with Claire to organise a delivery.

Finally, at the end of the summer we will send a short evaluation form to see how it went. At this point, if you would like to develop your origination to offer digital support, we can have a conversation about how to make this a reality. We want to leave you with just one last thing. Below is a report that talks about minimum digital living standards for families. It pushes the boundaries of it being acceptable just to survive, and instead talks about thriving. You can access it HERE

We want all our young people to have the same access to a positive digital future that any child has. We hope the resources we are putting into this will help your local families. Thank you for your support and good luck.
