We are really proud to support over 1000 people to learn new skills every year. Right now it’s tough though. There is loads of stuff online to help you learn you things right now, but sometimes that can add to the pressure of keeping it together whilst physical distancing. Our sessions are still running but look a bit different nowadays. You can keep connected with the people you know whilst still challenging yourself to learn new skills at home.
Digital (see more detail) We has spent a few weeks training our amazing digital champions to use tools that mean that we can help people to learn computer skills whilst still at home. Ryan is now running 5 online sessions each week that you can join. We are also part of the Future Dot Now/ Good Things Foundation loan scheme which allows us to support people who do not have equipment at home. For more information email ryan@startpoint.org.uk or phone 07537 127 095
Communiversity (see more detail) – Communiversity is a skills sharing programme run by Hayley. Last year over 300 people were involved in this fun and friendly adult learning programme. Communiversity has now turned into a club that you can join. Each week Hayley will email or text you with some ideas of things to learn that week and week in touch. To contact Hayley you can phone 07312 124 267 or email hayley@startpoint.org.uk
Family Craft & Cooking Challenge (see more detail) – Nicola, like lots of parents, is feeling the pressure of homeschooling and getting a bit agitated by the perfect schooling social media posts. Because of this she is going to try out a few easy activities that don’t require you having lots of stuff in and tons of patience. They will be posted on The Starting Point Facebook Page every Monday morning and we ask that if you try them you post your pictures too, to inspire others. All activities will be archived at the bottom of this page. For more information you can contact nicola@startpoint.org.uk
Doorstop Depot – We know our community has a strength beyond each individual, so at a time of need we have set up two doorstop depots outside the homes of some of our Community Organising Team. On Bank Road in Bredbury & Woodlands Avenue in Woodley, we set up a free food points every Thursday afternoon. Initially providing bread, we hope to expand the options as time goes on. This is a provision where people take what they need when they need. For more information contact james@startpoint.org.uk or phone 07312 124 267
Continued support for Woodley & Bredbury COVID-19 Mutual Aid Group – On 14th March, our team set up the Woodley & Bredbury COVID-19 Mutual Aid Group on Facebook. We now have over 800 members. We have been set up to support people to stay safe and stay at home. We match neighbours with neighbours to do shopping, pick up prescriptions and offer friendly calls. Our phoneline is open everyday, for as long as it takes to get us all though this. The below video tells you more. You can call us 07312 124 267 or check in with us on Facebook.
We also produce a weekly Sunday playlist of songs nominated by our community. Listen to this week’s here >>
