For years we have tried to get as many people as possible online throughout Stockport. We run all sorts of sessions, from formal to informal and in a large variety of centres throughout our town. Despite this, we know that the message doesn’t always get to some people who could benefit.
For example, the three sisters tower blocks in Brinnington. Of residents asked 35% do not have internet access at home. Of these people, 55% stated that they do not have access because it is too expensive. As part of the UK Online Centre network, we know how important is if for people to be online, in order to access the widest range of services available to them.
So starting today, we are aiming to do something about that.
Stockport Homes, who manage the blocks, have invested heavily to offer free broadband to every resident in all three blocks by working with CommunityUK. Each resident will have the ability to create their own free account to help them get online. In addition, Stockport Homes will be offering half price purchase schemes for top of the range Lenovo tablets.
So that just leaves the skills issues. Working in partnership with Stockport Homes, we are transforming a 2 bedroom flat in Brecon Towers into an accessible and relaxed training facility for all residents to come and learn more. The flat opens its doors for the first time today from 2.30pm and will see a range of training courses; from drop in sessions, printing facilities, accredited City & Guilds courses and group learning for beginners to those hoping to become digital champions. Did we mention there would be food and tea too?
